2024 Retreats Update

In light of significant and exciting new projects that we are working towards, we will not be hosting our 18 Inch Journey Retreats this fall. We are looking towards the fall of 2025 as the best window to host our next retreats, as our upcoming discipleship schools will run from January through July. We value your support and understanding and look forward to sharing more with you in the coming months!

The 18 Inch Journey exists to close the gap between what we know about God in our heads and who we believe Him to be in our hearts.

The mission of the Cageless Birds is to respond to the commission of Jesus and make disciples of all nations. As a ministry, one of the ways we fulfill this is through our 18 Inch Journey discipleship programs focused on spiritual formation. We host summer camps for teenagers, schools for adults in their formative years, and retreats for men and women who desire to deepen their walk with the Lord. We run all of our programs at “A Place for the Heart,” our campus in North Carolina. In a culture of distraction, burnout, and spiritual fatigue, the 18 Inch Journey was created to equip people to tend to their inner life and relationships, walk in emotional health, and stay connected to Jesus in every season.

To learn more about our vision for discipleship, the history and mission of the 18 Inch Journey, and how discipleship can transform the hearts of men and women, check out this episode from the Jonathan & Melissa Helser Podcast:

Who We Are

We are the Cageless Birds: a non-profit ministry, creative collective, missional community, and small business in the heart of North Carolina. We were founded by Jonathan & Melissa Helser and seeing sons and daughters experience a head-on collision with the love of God is our great reward.
